Warren County Firefighter Gearing Up For Challenge
What is the Firefighter Combat Challenge?
Wearing "full bunker gear" and a Scott Air-Pak(r), pairs of firefighter's race head-to-head on a linked series of five grueling fire-related tasks. Competitors must climb a five story tower while carrying a 45-lb high-rise pack, then hoist a 45-lb hose roll to the top of the tower. Next they descend to the base of the tower where they simulate chopping by driving a 160-lb steel beam a distance of five feet using a 9-lb. shot mallet. They then zigzag 140-ft. between hydrants to the fourth station, where they advance an attack hose a distance of 75-ft. Finally, the competitors must drag a life-sized, 175-lb "victim" a distance of 100-ft to the finish line (the world record is under 80 seconds).
The Firefighter Combat Challenge has been seen by millions of people on television over the past decade (e.g., ESPN, AFN, and local news coverage), attracts hundreds of public safety organizations annually to more than 40 competitive events held throughout North America. In addition to giving First Responders a well deserved opportunity to publicly display their professional prowess, the events offer sponsors and alliance partners a very positive public relations platform on which to display their products, services and support for these domestic heroes in particular and public safety in general.
